Analytical Overview of Algeria's Exports for the Period 1963-2020
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to assess Algeria's export situation, analyze changes in the types of exports, and evaluate the success of diversifying beyond hydrocarbon products. It used a descriptive-analytical approach to achieve these objectives, focusing on the period 1963-2020. The study found that despite substantial growth in the value of Algerian exports since its independence (1962) to 2020, with exports multiplying significantly and expanding geographically, Algeria still heavily depends on the hydrocarbon sector for a large portion of its exports. Non-hydrocarbon exports, spanning all industries and product types, contribute minimally, despite multiple programs and policies aimed at diversifying the economy and exports. This is primarily due to the inefficiency of industries and other sectors and the limited competitiveness of Algerian products in international markets. This leads to the recommendation of the necessity to allocate a significant portion of hydrocarbon revenues to the development of infrastructure and the industrial base in various non-oil sectors that can be developed, enhancing their real contribution to adding value to the economy. This should be achieved by directing towards building a productive society, not just a consumer society.
